The image is created by a panel of different thicknesses of translucent, kiln-fired porcelain. These illuminated artworks are so detailed, that they are sometimes mistaken for photographs. The design is carved in wax and then a plaster mold is made from the master mold and porcelain is pressed inside. When the porcelain has dried it is removed from the mold, finished by hand and then fired to 2300oF. This high temperature makes the porcelain vitreous & translucent.
